Cyber Engineering, M.Phil.

Location(s): Research Based (European Model) and Asynchronous Online


The Master of Philosophy in Cyber Engineering is a comprehensive exploration of the cybersecurity landscape and how to mitigate risks using research, technical skills, and knowledge. Through this program, students will gain a deep understanding of the principles and ethics behind cyber engineering, as well as the laws and regulations governing scientific inquiry and privacy.

Students will also learn and apply computer forensics and incident handling procedures, analyze and engineer software, and conduct original research in this rapidly growing field. With the increasing frequency and severity of cybercrime, the need for experienced professionals in cyber engineering has never been greater.

Designed as a degree in research, the M.Phil. in Cyber Engineering program provides students with the opportunity to quickly engage in leadership, research, and publishing. It is ideal for those seeking to explore research studies before pursuing a doctorate or those seeking career advancement opportunities through a higher degree.

The program is structured for experienced professionals in the field who possess an appropriate undergraduate degree. Throughout the program, students will conduct original research in an approved area of Cyber Engineering, preparing them to be leaders in this critical field.

Upon completion of the program, students will produce, present, and defend a master’s dissertation, receiving approval from their Committee and the Academic Review Board.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon program completion, graduates will be able to:

  • Develop effective research proposals using appropriate methodologies and designs in an ethical manner. 

  • Incorporate the theoretical basis and practical applications of cyber engineering into related problem solving and task accomplishment.  

  • Execute a research project to successfully complete and defend a significant piece of scholarly work in cyber engineering. 

  • Demonstrate effective oral and writing skills in professional communications. 

  • Develop foundational knowledge and competencies in cyber engineering in preparation for advanced research.

  • No more than 6 credit-hours can be taken at the same time without Dean’s approval. 
  • Students may begin program by taking the four 8-week taught subject-matter courses first or MRS 700. 
  • MRS 700 must be first research course taken.
